Documentation MCP: choose Context7, Learn or AWS
Start with documentation that can answer your question. Then test the same small use case with explicit expectations.
A documentation server helps when its source collection matches your question. The number of tools it offers does not answer that question. First decide whether you need a library function, a Microsoft product or an AWS property. That gives you a checkable starting point without relying on a universal ranking.
Choose the source around the task
| Connection | Starting point | First independent check |
|---|---|---|
| Context7 | Library and its identifier | Does the result match the installed version? |
| Microsoft Learn | Microsoft documentation and code samples | Does the article cover the same product version? |
| AWS Knowledge | AWS documentation and regional information | Do service, feature and region match? |
The guides for Context7, Microsoft Learn and AWS Knowledge each provide a complete HTTP configuration. Choose one connection for your first exercise. Add others when their sources address a specific gap you can identify.
Record four details before making a request
Write down the question, version reference, expected source and success criterion. A useful criterion might require a particular parameter constraint to appear in the complete original section. A plausible answer alone does not meet that criterion. Limit the request to the technical details actually needed for your source comparison.
| Field | Example content |
|---|---|
| Question | One function, rather than an entire project |
| Scope | Package version, product edition or region |
| Source | Full URL and section |
| Observation | What was answered and what remains open |
Repeat the same question reproducibly
Choose a reference question whose answer you can already establish from an original source. Write down the expected statement before making the request.
Set up one of the documented connections and check that it works. Keep connection failures separate from results that do not address the question.
Find the source, read the full section and compare its scope. The same function name does not automatically imply the same product version.
Record the result, including missing information. After a relevant change, repeat the exercise with the same question and record the new retrieval date.
Assess answers against source passages
Do more than judge whether a response reads well. Check whether its source supports the precise claim and whether you have read the prerequisites. For a code sample, your own test includes imports, required packages and the expected return value. For a regional statement, keep the service, feature and region identifier together.
- Which documentation server is best?
- This comparison does not assign an overall rating. Start with the source area of your question and inspect a specific request. A different task may call for a different connection.
- Does a registry entry replace a documentation test?
- No. The registry shows declarations and their provenance. Use the source comparison to check whether a particular question receives a suitable answer in your environment.
- Should I enable every connection at once?
- One clearly identified connection is easier to assess in the first exercise. Add others when you can explain which additional source or task they are meant to cover.
- How should I handle a missing version reference?
- Mark that match as unresolved and look for a version branch in the original source. Test an example separately before applying it to the version installed in your project.
Find more starting points in the code and design app selection. The registry overview shows which declarations the full dataset actually contains.
Vendor documentation read on 3 October 2026. Run the proposed checks in your own environment.
